The Holy Spirit is the true model of prayer. When He is leading a prayer session, prayer can go places and defy models. But for the Christians who would like to learn prayer models and practical praying styles, the five finger practical praying model is also ideal.

1) Your Thumb

The closest finger to you is your thumb, so begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. They include your immediate family, extended families, friends, neighbors and Church members.

2) The Pointing Finger

The pointing finger reminds us of those who instruct us. Therefore, pray for those who teach, instruct and direct us. This includes teachers, ministers and Pastors. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers. These men and women have great influence on society and we should pray that they display and teach godly principles in all they do.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

2 Thessalonians 3

3) The Tallest/Middle Finger

Our tallest finger reminds us of those who are in charge. Pray for the government and our leaders in business and industry. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. We should pray that our decision makers repent and seek God’s will as they lead us.

7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Jeremiah 29:7

4) The Ring Finger

The ring finger is our weakest finger. It is the only finger that cannot stand erect like others.

It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, the less privileged, the sick, the imprisoned, the pregnant women and those in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them especially if they are members of your church. You owe them this prayer.

5) Lastly, the Little Finger

The smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others.

By the time we have prayed for the other four groups, our own needs will be put into proper perspective and we will be able to pray for ourselves more effectively.

Final words

The Five finger prayer is a model of what prayer entails. It helps us to know what to pray without thinking too much.

However, we must know that prayer should not be started without rendering thanks and praises to God, and asking for cleansing and forgiveness of sins; for it is only a pure heart that can find God. Also, prayers should also not end without thanking God for answering our prayers.
